After graduating from the Moscow Law Institute, Ivanov became a member of the Communist Party (CPSU) in 1934. In 1935 he defended his thesis on the problem of social equality as the method of Marx, and, being the personal secretary of Nikolai Bukharin, was subsequently imprisoned for several years. Ivanov was one of the first Soviet philosophers to begin to analyse the problems of philosophy in the mid-1930s. After being released from prison, Ivanov became active in theological work. He helped to edit, and then supervised, the publication of the full collection of philosophical manuscripts of Karl Marx in three volumes. In 1949 the collection was published as Karl Marx on the history of religion. Ivanov was a close friend of Leon Trotsky and a member of the organization “Marxism-Leninism” in the Soviet Union. In 1967 he moved from the Party’s Marxist–Leninist wing to the “Liberal” Communist Party as a result of the Zhdanovshchina, and he remained a “Marxist–Leninist” until his retirement in 1989. Ivanov is the author of The Dialectical Theory of Knowledge, a key work in the application of the dialectical method of Hegel to the problems of logic, epistemology and ontology, to which he added material on the philosophy of Marx and Engels. He was also a major authority on the theory of science, particularly the theory of the dialectic of natural and social science, and the philosophy of natural science. He also studied the nature of secularisation in the modern world.
