The software serves as a virtual robot-park where the children can develop their software. The software is a browser-based environment that allows the children to develop and learn to program virtual robots in a digital play-space.

History
In 2011 a prototype that was developed by the Group of Educational Developers, TELLTECHNIK, was tested in school and evaluated at various conferences.

In 2012 the first version of Robot-Park was developed and released to the public. The system was used in various educational institutions and festivals.

In 2013 the second version with new features was released, including a new toolkit and a modular system that allowed for easy extension and embedding of the software in other projects.

In 2014 the third version was released with the possibility to extend the system using hardware including Arduino, Teensy and other microcontroller platforms.

In 2015 the fourth version was released and brought the possibility to extend the system using a Raspberry Pi computer and introducing a new pedagogical layer.

In 2016 the fifth version was released and brought a new approach to the user experience that included application and laptop scenarios.

In 2017 the 6th version was released and brought new user experience using the robot programming environment with iOS and Android applications and web application widgets.

In 2018 the 7th version was released and brought the possibility to embed Robot-Park in the social network, compatible with various devices.

In 2019 the 8th version was released and included new smartphone based experiences.

Features
Robot Programming Environment (RPE): A JavaScript environment that allows kids to develop and control virtual robots using a WebCam. Children can drag and drop the programming elements to create digital parks and robot programs.
Robot Programming Environment software (RPE): A browser-based environment that allow children to develop and control virtual robots using a WebCam. Children can drag and drop the programming elements to create digital parks and robot programs.
Robot Programming Environment Website: The Robot-Park Website allows the users to register, download and install the software. It also has a demo version of the software that can be used as a playground for learning and play.
The robot programming elements: Wooden Plastics Box, MakerBot Thing-O-Matic (wooden set), Kanban Cards, a self-made Mind Machine with laser-cut wooden moving parts.

Possible Applications
Introduce students in the basics of programming and explain the Arduino, Raspberry

The user can program the robot by handwriting or typing in a virtual language (Robot-Park-Script).
The robot goes through an accessible tutorial in which the user can choose among predefined activities in a virtual park.
The robot understands simple or complex commands in a symbolic way.
The user can program the robot by simply pointing and clicking on the wooden/plastic elements with the mouse.
The activity of a robot in a virtual park is shown in three dimensions on a web-cam.
In the web-cam, the user can see the 3D position of his robot in the virtual park, its movement and the graphic representation of its activity.

Being able to program a robot by simply pointing and clicking gives parents and teachers the possibility to explain a command to a child.
Since the robot stands up when pressed by a simple command to the user from the point of view of a user that can not yet formulate abstract commands, it is possible to provide children with a starting point.
This facilitates the understanding of how programming is done and getting children acquainted with the concept of object-orientation.

Educational Effectiveness
A study was conducted in a primary school in Northern Italy and according to the results, the Robot-Park has a great impact on children’s programming skills.
Another study in secondary school in Northern Italy showed that the Robot-Park experience improved both programming skills and creativity.
In this study there was found a clear relationship between the children’s level of programming skills and their experience in the Robot-Park.
The Robot-Park was judged as a valuable medium for learning programming.

• Unlike digital environments, Robot-Park provides an interactive, natural environment with a tangible world for children to explore.

What’s New in the Robot-Park?

History
The concept of the Robot-Park is already existent for at least a couple of years.
In 2007, during his work, the writer Ulf Schlüter downloaded the database of the Greifswalder Strabe near Greifswald.
The Greifswalder Strabe is the one of the oldest and most prominent examples of its kind of the specific theme park.
They are a very good example for the concept of the Robot-Park, because the model of the park allows nearly unlimited possibilities to implement the idea of the Robot-Park.
The idea of the Robot-Park was initially developed in 2007 by Ulf Schlüter.
The first robot-park “Robot-Park” was build at the Malsmühle near Greifswald on June 2007.
The software Robot-Park was developed by Ulf Schlüter in collaboration with the sociologist Christof Schaub and the writer Florian Wagner.
In the same year two more robots-parks were build by different groups of people.

The first Robot-Park “Robotpark Gelsenkirchen” was build by Chantal and Florian at the Data Endorfer Klocke on July 2007.

The second Robot-Park was build in November 2007 by Florian Wagner and Ulf Schlüter in the Greifswalder Strabe in Malsmühle near Greifswald.
The environment of the park is based on the park of Malsmühle.
The robots-controllers are based on the controller of the ideal robot-parks in Greifswald, Berlin und Köln.
The software Robot-Park is written with the Java programming language.
On 8 December 2007, the first version of Robot-Park was released.
With the Robots-park the Freizeitveranstaltungen von Malsmühle are in different ways enlarged.

The development
At the beginning of 2008, the first update for Robot-Park was released.
In the spring of 2008, the first public demonstration of the robots-park takes place in Malsmühle.
The very first public presentation of the robots-park takes place at the festival “Finowie Meeting” in the summer of 2008 in the village Finow.
The public presentation was very well accepted by the public.
